Justin Fairfax Announces 2017 Campaign for Lieutenant Governor of Virginia

Monday, May 2, 2016 – Annandale, Virginia

Today, Justin Fairfax, former Assistant United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, publicly announced his campaign to be elected Lieutenant Governor of Virginia in 2017.

In 2013, Fairfax was a Democratic candidate for Attorney General of the Commonwealth of Virginia. At the age of 34, he shocked and impressed the political world and earned more than 48% of the statewide primary vote and the endorsement of The Washington Post, which cited his “agile and impressive command of the issues” and his “prosecutor’s passion for justice.” In that election – his first ever run for public office – Fairfax earned more than 68,000 votes and lost by less than 2 votes per precinct statewide. In 2014, Mr. Fairfax served as Co-Chair of Virginia Senator Mark Warner’s successful reelection campaign.

“I am passionate about creating and protecting economic security and opportunity for all Virginians,” said Fairfax. “As a former federal prosecutor, I know just how fragile security and stability for hard- working families can be. As a small business owner with my wife, Dr. Cerina Fairfax, I understand the importance of strengthening and diversifying Virginia’s economy. And, as a father, I know how important economic stability is for the future of all of Virginia’s children. As Lieutenant Governor, I will fight for Virginia’s families and make sure every child across the Commonwealth has the same opportunities I had to succeed.”

Fairfax has been recognized as one of the top attorneys in the nation and a rising star in Virginia politics. Fairfax is a skilled litigator and business advisor, who also possesses a broad array of private practice, government, and in-house experience. He currently serves as a top litigator in the Tysons Corner, VA office of the prestigious law firm, Venable LLP.

Fairfax previously served as an Assistant United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia in the Major Crimes and Narcotics Unit of the Alexandria Division. Fairfax also served as a federal law clerk to United States District Court Judge Gerald Bruce Lee in the Alexandria Division of the Eastern District of Virginia. Together with his prior work as a Judiciary Affairs Staffer in the United States Senate, Fairfax has worked in the legislative, executive, and judicial branches of government.

Fairfax earned his J.D. at Columbia Law School, where he was a recipient of the Wien Scholarship and was selected as a member of the prestigious Columbia Law Review. Fairfax attended Duke University as a recipient of the Reginaldo B. Howard Academic Scholarship. He graduated from Duke with a degree in Public Policy Studies, and he was selected as the class graduation speaker for the Duke University Sanford School of Public Policy. Fairfax went on to serve on the Duke University Board of Trustees and the Board of Visitors for the Sanford School of Public Policy.

Fairfax has served on a number of other leadership Boards, including the Fairfax County Criminal Justice Advisory Board, Fairfax County Public Schools Minority Student Achievement Oversight Committee, Planned Parenthood of Metropolitan Washington Action Fund, and the Democratic Business Council of Northern Virginia.

Justin’s wife, Dr. Cerina W. Fairfax, DDS, is a graduate of the VCU School of Dentistry in Richmond, Virginia and Duke University. In 2015, Dr. Fairfax was honored by the VCU School of Dentistry as the Most Outstanding Alumna of the Last Decade. Justin and Cerina have one son, Cameron, and one daughter, Carys. They live in Northern Virginia where they own a thriving family dental practice.
